I have a best friend.
His name is Odee.
We've been best friends
for a long time.
We do everything together.
I don't know
exactly what he is.
But I do know
that he is my friend.
And that is enough.

Today, we got lost together.
Odee said it was Moving Day.
I thought that was
not a good day to get lost.
But Odee said that it would be best.
I love Hickory Street.
But I love Odee more.
So, we decided to run away.
It was chilly out.
Odee said I should wear my rubbers.
I did.
Odee said I should not forget my scarf.
I picked out my blue one.
It is the same color as his fur.
It tickles my chin
just like Odee's fur.

Out the window we climbed.
Just like we always did.
Usually, our adventures were fun.
This one seemed to be serious.
But Odee was there
and that made things better.
We ran into the Coral Forest.
One of our favorite places to play.
We hid there often.
Odee would lead me here
when Uncle came to visit.
Uncle was loud
and smelly.
He smelled like rotten apples
and he scared Odee away.

I asked Odee if Uncle was coming.
Odee said, "One last time."
I did not know what that meant
but I was with Odee.
And that was good.
We came to the Roadsign.
It was at the edge of the Coral Forest.
I had seen it many times.
Three arrows:
Back.
Yonder.
Waaay Down.
"Back!" I yelled.
Just like we always did.
Odee's face changed
a sad look settled in.
He shook his head and his
ears flopped.
If his face had not seemed so sad
his floppy ears would have
made me giggle.

"We can't go back, Doe."
It was my favorite nickname.
"Uncle is coming. But this time
will be the last.
We're going to leave.
No more hurting my lovely Doe."
I did not know what Odee meant
but his words were so full:
Love.
Ache.
Hope.
"Ok..." I whispered.
I don't know why
but I was crying.
"Which way?" I asked.
Odee thought.
Then spoke.
"Back is no good anymore.
Waaay Down is dark and bad.
Yonder!
Yonder is for us, Doe!"

I took my best friend's hand
and we got Lost together.
I don't know why
but I stopped crying.
I started smiling.
And do you know
what?
I never even thought
about Hickory Street
again!

The End.
